1 CONT       Another pioneer woman Allmira Adams Harris was born March 11, 1853 
1 CONC in Williamsburg, Maine. In the early 1870's she came to Greeley with her 
1 CONC parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Harris who were among the pioneers there. Two 
1 CONC years later the family moved to St. Cloud, the county, where she met 
1 CONC David Elmer Ankney, to whom she was married in Fort Collins on her 
1 CONC twenty-third birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Ankney made their home in St. Cloud 
1 CONC from 1873 to 1893, where five children were born to them - Carrol, John, 
1 CONC Aubrey, Floyd, and one daughter, Iva, who was Mrs. Rosentreter.
1 CONT       She was a woman of great strength of character, and was highly 
1 CONC esteemed by all who knew her, admired for uprightness and integrity in 
1 CONC their respective communities. Allmira was daughter of Joseph Harris who 
1 CONC in 1881 built the business block of North College Avenue, occupied by the 
1 CONC Clover Leaf Cafe and was one of Fort Collins' best-liked and most 
1 CONC enterprising citizens.
1 CONT      Mrs. Ankney was stricken with heart trouble and was summoned to the 
1 CONC great beyond, the funeral was held November 7, 1909 from the residence of 
1 CONC N.C. Garbutt, 703 West Mountain A Venue, services conducted by Dr. J.W. 
1 CONC Skinner. 
1 CONT       Relatives in attendance included Mrs. Mary Woods of Fort Collins, 
1 CONC Colorado and Mrs. Augusta Cramer of Wheatland, Wyoming, sisters of the 
1 CONC deceased. Another sister,Mrs. William Watrous was unable to come.

1 CONT Mrs. D. E. Ankeny Dies in Colorado.
1 CONT      Word was received at Wheatland last Saturday of the death of Mrs. D. 
1 CONC E. Ankeny, of this place, which occurred that day at Fort Collins, 
1 CONC Colorado, where the deceased had gone several months since to enter a 
1 CONC sanitarium for treatment. Death was caused as the result of dropsy and 
1 CONC heart disease.
1 CONT      Elmira Harris was born in Maine, being past 55 years of age at the 
1 CONC time of her death. She was Married to D. E. Ankeny at Fort Collins in 
1 CONC 1876, where she resided until the family moved to Wyoming in the pioneer 
1 CONC days of the country.
1 CONT     Besides her husband the deceased is survived by five children, C. E. 
1 CONC Ankeny, Floyd Ankeny, and Mrs. Gus Rosentreter, of this place, Tom 
1 CONC Ankeny, of Sheridan, Wyoming, and John L. Ankeny of Fort Collins, 
1 CONC Colorado. Two sisters, Mrs. T. J. Cramer and Mrs. W. A. Watrous, also 
1 CONC reside at this place.
1 CONT      Mr. Ankeny, C. E. Ankeny, Floyd Ankeny, Mrs. Rosentreter, and Mrs. 
1 CONC Cramer took Sunday evening's train for Fort Collins to be present at the 
1 CONC funeral, Mrs. Watrous being unable to attend on account of sickness.
1 CONT      The funeral was held the first of the week and the remains were laid 
1 CONC at rest beside those of the deceased's father and mother in the Fort 
1 CONC Collins cemetery.
1 CONT      Mrs. Ankeny was well known and highly respected by a wide circle of 
1 CONC friends in this vicinity, who will be pained to learn of her sudden 
1 CONC death. She had been rapidly improving and it was thought that she would 
1 CONC be entirely cured in a short time, but her sudden demise casts a gloom 
1 CONC over the entire community.

1 CONT      Mrs. Myra A. Ankney, mother of J. L. Ankney, this city, died at 2:30 
1 CONC o'clock last Saturday, November 7th at Mineral Wells, Texas, after a long 
1 CONC and painful illness. The news of her death came as a shock to all of her 
1 CONC friends in this city, especially to her son, advices were to the effect 
1 CONC that her condition was slowly improving through the change from Denver to 
1 CONC Mineral Wells. Mrs. Ankney's sister, Mrs. Woods, was with her when death 
1 CONC came to the sufferer. Heart disease was the cause of death.
1 CONT      The body will be brought to this city for burial and is expected to 
1 CONC arrive here on Tuesday. J. L. Ankney went to Denver this morning to meet 
1 CONC his aunt, Mrs. Woods, who is accompanying the body from Texas.

1 CONC Sheridan, Carroll was born in 1877 rather than 1878,  he was 15 when he 
1 CONC went to Wyoming, Marjorie Bergman was living at Sheridan rather than 
1 CONC Wheatland and his second marriage was not in 1930.  He couldn't  have 
1 CONC learned his trade from his grandfather Alexander Ankeny, a blacksmith,  
1 CONC who died 16 years before he was born. The occupation of his grandfather 
1 CONC Harris was farmer and carpenter.  He apparently did not like his first

1 CONT Heart Attack Proves Fatal To Father Of Eight Children
1 CONT        Death came this Thursday morning, January 31. 1946, to 67 year-old 
1 CONC Carroll Edwin Ankeny, formerly of Powell, but for the past ten years a 
1 CONC blacksmith at Garland. 
1 CONT       He came to Powell from Wheatland in 1935, and for a few months was 
1 CONC employed at the Dawson Brothers blacksmith shop.
1 CONT       Mr. Ankeny is survived by a wife and four small children, but has 
1 CONC four other grown children by a former marriage, all of whom have been 
1 CONC notified of their father's death and it is not known whether or not any 
1 CONC of these older children will be here at the funeral, which is to be held 
1 CONC at the Garland church Sunday or Monday, depending upon the time of 
1 CONC arrival of distant family members. Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery.
1 CONT       Mr. Ankeny, a blacksmith since boyhood, died of a coronary 
1 CONC thrombosis attack. He had been a hard working blacksmith all his life, 
1 CONC and never was ill, and this heart attack came upon him suddenly on Friday 
1 CONC night of last week, when he was taken to the Powell hospital, where he 
1 CONC died a week later.           
1 CONT      Carroll Ankeny was born September 22, 18'78, at fort Collins, 
1 CONC Colorado, where he spent his boyhood and at a very early age learned the 
1 CONC Blacksmithing trade in his grandfather's shop. He went to Wheatland when 
1 CONC a boy of twelve, and for many years was a Wheatland blacksmith.
1 CONT      Ankeny's first marriage was to Katherine Maloney, an Iowa girl, on 
1 CONC April 15, 1901. To them were born four children, namely: a daughter 
1 CONC Marjory, wife of Ed Bergman of Wheatland; a daughter Marie, working in a 
1 CONC beauty parlor at Casper; a son Elmer, rancher at Sheridan; another son 
1 CONC Charles, who it, will be remembered was reported missing in the armed 
1 CONC service in the early months of the recent war. He returned home safe and 
1 CONC well much to the surprise and joy of his father's last year of Life. He 
1 CONC is now working with his brother Elmer at Sheridan.
1 CONT      Mr. Ankeny's second marriage was on May 4, 1930, to Martha TePoel or 
1 CONC Schuyler, Nebraska. To this marriage were born four children, the eldest 
1 CONC of whom is Carol Jean: now: 14 years of age; another daughter Roberta 
1 CONC Lou, now 8 years of age; a six-year old son Andrew David; a 
1 CONC four-months-old son Lary Charles.

1 CONT HARRIS - At the residence of his daughter, Mrs. C. I. Woods, two miles 
1 CONC west of this city, on Sunday afternoon, October 30., 1892, of Pneumonia, 
1 CONC aged 69 years, 5 months and 20 days.
1 CONT       Mr. Harris was born at Poland, Cumberland Co., Maine, May I0th, 
1 CONC 1843 [1823 - rjb). At the age of twelve years he moved with his parents 
1 CONC to the northern part of the state, where in 1848 he met and married Miss 
1 CONC Sarah W. Adams.
1 CONT      When the war broke out he early enlisted in the 11th Me. Vol. Co. H. 
1 CONC where he served three years. Mr. Harris entered the service a hale and 
1 CONC hearty young man. Three years of hard service for his country left the 
1 CONC young man's health much impaired and his once strong constitution 
1 CONC weakened so chronic trouble resulted, from which he never entirely 
1 CONC recovered. At the close of the war he settled in Marshall Co., Iowa 
1 CONC remaining there five years from whence he came to Colorado soon after the 
1 CONC emigration of the Greeley colony.
1 CONT      As one of the early settlers of  Western Colorado he engaged in 
1 CONC stock raising which business he followed for a number of years, 
1 CONC subsequently moving to Fort Collins where spent the greater part of his 
1 CONC remaining life. During his residence in Fort Collins he was an active 
1 CONC businessman managing a large farm and building the business block now 
1 CONC occupied by A. Blackmer.
1 CONT      While in Wyoming looking after cattle interests it became evident to 
1 CONC Mr. Harris that his health was rapidly failing and he returned to Fort 
1 CONC Collins where he could have medical aid. Soon after he was prostrated 
1 CONC with an attack of la grippe from the effects of which he never recovered 
1 CONC and from that time until the close of his life he was a great sufferer, 
1 CONC but he bore the pain patiently and with Christian fortitude. Mr. Harris 
1 CONC was a man who made many friends, he was warm hearted, kind and genial, he 
1 CONC possessed many virtues and no vices. When a young man he gave his heart 
1 CONC to God and lived a consistent Christian life. He was devoted to his 
1 CONC family of which a wife and four children survive him.
1 CONT      The funeral took place at the M. E. church on Tuesday afternoon and 
1 CONC was attended by a large number of sympathizing friends, the services 
1 CONC being conducted by Rev. J. F. Coffman under the auspices of the G. A. R.

1 CONT        Harris - At Fort Collins, Colo, March 29, 1902, Mrs. S. W. Harris, 
1 CONC at the age of seventy-two years, one month and twelve days.
1 CONT Sarah W. Adams was born in Brunswick, Me., February 7, 1830, where she 
1 CONC lived till the close of the Civil War, at which time she removed with her 
1 CONC family to Iowa, thence to Colorado in 1871, since which time she has 
1 CONC resided for the most part in this state.
1 CONT       Shortly after her marriage to Joseph Harris in 1848, she, with her 
1 CONC husband, joined the Methodist Episcopal church. In 1881, being convinced 
1 CONC that there was more truth and richer experience stored in the Word of God 
1 CONC for her, she associated herself with the Seventh Day Adventist church, of 
1 CONC which she remained a faithful member till the day of her death. 
1 CONT She was a woman of exceptional strength of character, and met the cares 
1 CONC and responsibilities of life, including the hardships and privations of 
1 CONC the pioneer, not only with patience and Christian fortitude, but, what is 
1 CONC more, with a cheerfulness that shed a continuous ray of moral sunshine 
1 CONC into the hearts of those about her, ever ready to lend a helping hand to 
1 CONC those less fortunate than herself.  In her demise, the community has been 
1 CONC deprived of a noble example of Christian life, the church of a faithful 
1 CONC member, and her children and grandchildren have suffered a loss 
1 CONC irreparable until the Life giver shall sound the trump or God.
1 CONT      All her children, four daughters, a large number of grandchildren 
1 CONC and two aged sisters, survive to mourn.

1 CONT Pioneer Wyoming Teacher Succumbs
1 CONT      Mrs. Kathryn Marie Ankney, pioneer Wyoming and Iowa school teacher, 
1 CONC died Thursday at her home on Beaver creek. She had been ill for two weeks.
1 CONT      Born in Waukon, Ia., Dec. 28, 1878, Mrs. Ankney had lived in 
1 CONC Sheridan county eight years, coming here from Wheatland. She had been a 
1 CONC resident of Wyoming since 1896. Before her marriage to Carroll E. Ankney, 
1 CONC now deceased, she taught school in her native state and in Wyoming.
1 CONT      She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society in Wheatland, the 
1 CONC Third Order of St. Francis in Wheatland and Holy Name Catholic church in 
1 CONC Sheridan.
1 CONT      Survivors are two sons, Elmer, Route 1, Sheridan, and Charles, 
1 CONC Cheyenne; two daughters, Mrs. C. E. Bergman, Sheridan, and Marie Ankney, 
1 CONC Casper, and 11 grandchildren.
1 CONT      Funeral services will be held from Holy Name church Monday at 9 
1 CONC a.m., the Rev. F. J. Kimmett officiating. There will be a rosary at 
1 CONC Champion's Funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

1 CONC Mr. Bergman resided at 118 West Seventh. He was born Oct. 2, 1896 at 
1 CONC Nashville, Tenn. He came to Sheridan in 1941 from Wheatland. He married 
1 CONC Marjorie Ankeny on July 21, 1929, in Wheatland. He is a veteran of World 
1 CONC War I and a retired employee of the VA hospital.
1 CONT Survivors include his widow, of Sheridan; two daughters, Eleanor Bryant, 
1 CONC Utica, Mich., Charlotte Ekwall, Buffalo; four Sons, Charles, Idaho Falls,

1 CONT Henry Knox Adams. We chronicled, last week, the death of this aged 
1 CONC gentleman and his wife. It appears from a letter addressed by his son, J. 
1 CONC Web Adams of Boston, to Prof. Packard, that his father and mother were 
1 CONC sick but a week, both being down with intermittent fever, which, in the 
1 CONC case of  the father, took on a congestive form, and that in the mother a 
1 CONC typhoid fever form. It was often expressed wish that they might be 
1 CONC permitted to depart together, and that wish was singularly fulfilled, one 
1 CONC dying on the 31 of August, the other 1st September. They removed to Iowa 
1 CONC in 1863, and the youngest son and wife were absent at the time of their 
1 CONC death, preparing a new home in Colorado, to which the old couple were to 
1 CONC be removed this fall. The remains were brought east, and interred in 
1 CONC Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. We gave these few particulars of the death 
1 CONC of Mr. Adams and wife, as they long resided here, and we find our elderly 
1 CONC people speak warmly and affectionately of them.

1 CONT Funeral Here Wednesday, Burial In Fort Collins, Colo.
1 CONT      The death of David Elmer Ankeny, Monday in Wheatland marked the 
1 CONC passing of another of the county's old settlers. His death came as a 
1 CONC distinct shock to his many friends and relatives as he had been sick with 
1 CONC pneumonia but had been reported as having passed the danger point and was 
1 CONC on the way to recovery.
1 CONT      Mr. Ankeny came to this section of Wyoming 36 years ago and settled 
1 CONC in the Slate Creek country and very shortly moved to the Sibylle Creek 
1 CONC vicinity where he had made his home ever since. He became one of the 
1 CONC leaders in his community and shared the hardships with the rest of the 
1 CONC cattlemen of that district. His ranch is located on the highway and the 
1 CONC hill also on the highway near it still retains the name of Ankeny Hill. 
1 CONC Since the death of his wife, in 1908 he has made his home with his 
1 CONC daughter, Mrs. Gus Rosentrater, also in the Sibylle Creek neighborhood. 
1 CONT      David Elmer Ankeny was born in Salem Ohio, July 20th, 1855 and at 
1 CONC the time of his death he was 72 years 11 months, and five days old. While 
1 CONC still an infant his parents moved to Iowa from Ohio and his father died 
1 CONC there when he was 6 years of age. His mother then left Iowa and for a 
1 CONC period of three years they lived in Pennsylvania. They returned to Iowa 
1 CONC where they lived on the home farm until he was nineteen.  In 1874 he came 
1 CONC to Fort Collins, Colo and engaged in the cattle business.  On March 11th, 
1 CONC 1876 he was united in marriage to Almira Adams Harris and from this union 
1 CONC there were six children born, Carol, John Lawrence, Iva Augusta, Thomas 
1 CONC Aubray, Floyd Harris and Roy the youngest who died in infancy.  In 1892 
1 CONC he left Colorado and came to Wyoming, where for a short time he lived on 
1 CONC Slate Creek, moving from there to the Sibylle Creek, twenty-two miles 
1 CONC from Wheatland.  He continued in the cattle business and in 1908, when 
1 CONC his wife died at  Mineral Wells, Tex., at which place they were visiting 
1 CONC temporarily for her health, he brought her back to Fort Collins for 
1 CONC burial and then came back to the Sybille country.
1 CONT      He leaves to mourn his death, his daughter, and her husband Mr. and 
1 CONC Mrs. Gus Rosentrater and family of Sybille Creek, his son,  Carol Ankeny 
1 CONC and family of Wheatland, Aubrey Ankeny and family of Boise, Idaho and 
1 CONC Jack Ankeny and family of Fort Collins, Colo.  Floyd Ankeny died in 
1 CONC Laramie, January 7th 1927.
1 CONT      Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Wednesday 
1 CONC afternoon with Rev. H. E. Shepherd preaching the funeral oration.  The 
1 CONC body was prepared for shipment to Fort Collins by the Watson Mortuary and 
1 CONC left on the midnight train Wednesday night, with H. G. Watson in charge. 
1 CONC The Elks lodge of Fort Collins, of which the deceased was a member, will 
1 CONC have charge of the services there and burial will take place beside his 
1 CONC wife in the Fort Collins cemetery.

1 CONT The representative citizen, of whom we now write occupies a position in 
1 CONC the front rank of Wyoming’s successful stockmen, and as a citizen, he has 
1 CONC long enjoyed distinctive precedence in the various localities where his 
1 CONC lot has been cast. His business qualifications, of a high order, have won 
1 CONC him recognition among his fellow men and all with whom he has had 
1 CONC relations, business, fraternal or otherwise, have been quick to recognize 
1 CONC his merit and to appreciate his true worth as an enterprising, energetic 
1 CONC man of affairs. D. Elmer Ankeny is a native of Ohio, the son of Alexander 
1 CONC and Nancy Ankeny, the father born in Pennsylvania and the mother in the 
1 CONC Buckeye State. By occupation Alexander Ankeny was a blacksmith. He was 
1 CONC married in Randolph County, Ohio and lived there until 1856, when he 
1 CONC migrated to Iowa, locating at the town of Marietta, where he worked at 
1 CONC his trade until his death in 1861. His son D. Elmer, was born in the 
1 CONC county of Randolph on July 20, 1855, but spent his childhood and youth in 
1 CONC Iowa, whither he was taken when about one year old. He was a lad of only 
1 CONC about eleven years when his father died, and being the eldest of the 
1 CONC children, was early obliged to contribute to the support of the family. 
1 CONC He worked at any kind of honorable employment that his hands found to do 
1 CONC and turned over his earnings to his mother, thus proving a valuable help 
1 CONC to her while she was rearing her younger children. Meanwhile and later 
1 CONC pursued his studies as opportunities afforded at Marshalltown, devoting 
1 CONC the spring and summer seasons to farm labor until his nineteenth year, 
1 CONC when in the spring of 1873, he went to Colorado and for some months 
1 CONC thereafter worked on a ranch near Fort Collins. Believing that money 
1 CONC could be made in the stock business and not caring longer to remain an 
1 CONC employee, he purchased a few cattle and branched out as a stockman upon 
1 CONC his own responsibility. Beginning in a modest way he soon succeeded in 
1 CONC greatly increasing his business and in due time found himself on the high 
1 CONC road to success. He located a ranch in Laramie County, about forty miles 
1 CONC west of fort Collins, and remained there until 1895, when he sold and 
1 CONC came to Wyoming, purchasing his present ranch on Sybylle Creek, eighteen 
1 CONC miles southwest of Wheatland, in the county of Laramie. Since the latter 
1 CONC year Mr. Ankeny has been busily engaged in raising cattle and horses, 
1 CONC building up a large and lucrative business and as already states, he has 
1 CONC won a conspicuous place among the leading ranchmen of this section of the 
1 CONC state. He owns a valuable tract of grazing land, embracing several 
1 CONC hundred acres, which is well watered and covered with a dense growth of 
1 CONC the nutritious grasses for which the rich valleys of Laramie County are 
1 CONC especially noted. On this range he keeps large herds of cattle which like

1 CONC the enterprising catteraisers of Laramie County, and is one of the 
1 CONC leaders of the rich industry in his section of the country. Mr. Ankeny 
1 CONC was married at Fort Collins, Colorado on March 11, 1877, to Myra Harris, 
1 CONC a daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Adams) Harris, the parents moving to 
1 CONC Colorado from Iowa about 1871. Mr. Harris farmed near Greeley for a 
1 CONC number of years, subsequently moving to Wyoming, where he did not long 
1 CONC remain returning to Colorado where his death occurred in 1893. Mrs. 
1 CONC Harris preceded her husband to the "Silent Land,’ departing this life on 
1 CONC March 19, 1892. Mr. and Mrs. Ankeny have five children, Carroll, John, 
1 CONC Aubrey, Iva and Floyd. Mr. Ankeny takes a deep interest in everything 
1 CONC pertaining to the industrial development and general welfare of the 
1 CONC county and state of his adoption, and is deservedly classed with its most 
1 CONC progressive men. Practical industry, wisely and vigorously pursued and 
1 CONC sound judgement in matters of business, have brought their reward in the 
1 CONC liberal amount of this world’s goods which he now possesses. He is a 
1 CONC creditable representative of a class of men to whom, more than to any 
1 CONC other, is due the continued growth and prosperity of the West. In every 
1 CONC relation of life he has lived up to his conception of right proving 
1 CONC himself an honorable, upright and progressive member of the commonwealth 
1 CONC in which he exercises citizenship.

1 CONC Company, a prominent Elk and well known throughout the city, leaves Fort 
1 CONC Collins on the early train this morning for Davenport, IA., where he will 
1 CONC be married.
1 CONT      At Davenport there is now awaiting Mr. Ankney the girl who is to 
1 CONC become his bride, Miss Harriet Wissler. The latter is also well-known in 
1 CONC Fort Collins, having lived here about five years. She left here only last 
1 CONC summer to spend the few months intervening the date of their marriage. 
1 CONC She is the daughter of Mrs. Katherine Wissler, also a former resident of 
1 CONC Fort Collins. Both mother and daughter left the city together.
1 CONT      The bride-to-be was engaged at the Tyler-Lowe stores for some time 
1 CONC and won many friends by her winning ways and lovable disposition. The 
1 CONC wedding will take place next Wednesday at Davenport, after which the 
1 CONC couple will go on a wedding tour. On their return to Fort Collins, they 
1 CONC will make their home at 816 West Oak street.
